The following definitions are intended purely as terms used within the manufacture of industrial fans and ducts, as well as their respective industries. Though the definitions are meant to help uncertain customers with terminologies, Turbo Air Technology still strongly recommends customers seek answers via phone.

A

Acoustics
The term 'acoustics' within industrial manufacture is normally used to describe the separation of sound.

Axial Fan
The axial-flow fans have blades that force air to move parallel to the shaft about which the blades rotate. Axial fans blow air along the axis of the fan. This type of fan can be used in varying applications; from small cooling fans for electronics to the giant fans used in wind tunnels.

B

Belt Drive:
A set of sheaves are mounted on the motor shaft and the fan wheel shaft. The belt then transmits the mechanical energy from the motor to the fan.

Blower:
A fan designed to blow air into a mine, usually to remove dust caused by operations done within mines.

C

CAD drawing
CAD stands for Computer-Aided Design and can also be known as (CADD) Computer-Aided Design & Drafting. It is the way a lot of projects are drawn up before handed into production.

Centrifugal Fan:
Used industrially. A fan that produces stronger pressure due to the set of blades positioned in a central shaft. It is also known as a radial fan.

D

Damper:
Fan dampers are used to control gas flow in and out of the centrifugal fan. They may be installed on the inlet or outlet side of the fan, or sometimes both. Dampers on the outlet side impose a flow resistance that is then used to control gas flow. Dampers on the inlet side (inlet vanes) are designed to control gas flow by changing the amount of gas or air admitted to the fan inlet.

Direct Drive:
The fan wheel can be linked directly to the shaft of an electric motor. This means that the fan wheel speed is identical to the motor's rotational speed. With this type of fan drive mechanism, the fan speed cannot be varied unless the motor speed is adjustable.

Duct:
A duct is usually shaped in the form of a tube or pipe to transmit substances such as heat, ventilation, exhaust, and liquid from one place to another.

Ductwork:
A set of tubes/pipes transmitting substances (such as heat/ventilation/exhaust/liquid) throughout a building.

E

Exhaust
Tubing used to guide reaction exhaust gases away from a controlled combustion inside an engine or stove. The entire system conveys burnt gases from the engine and includes one or more exhaust pipes. Depending on the overall system design, the exhaust gas may flow through one or more end.

F

Fan
A machine designed to produce airflow. The pressure of the air often depends on the size of the fan, the type of motor, and the arrangement of blades.

Fan Performance Testing
A service to ensure that the fan is performing within an acceptable standard. Depending on the client, there may be several standards, though generally in accordance with AS2936.

I

Impeller
A rotor inside a tube or conduit used to increase the pressure and flow.

Impeller Balancing
A service to check that the balance of the impeller is within standard. Repairs are done if needed, and balance checks are also done during shut downs.

L

Lockseam
A form of ducting where the edges of the ducts are locked and pressed together.

Lufttechnik
One of the company names Turbo Air Technology previously used.

M

Modular
Ducting that is connected with different pipes, bends, and elbows when duct transit frequently needs to change direction within the ductwork.

O

Oval
A type of duct that is pressed into an oval shape rather than a circle one when there is less head room (ie. in the ceiling).

P

Power Station
An industrial facility designed to generate electric power.

R

Radial:
Used industrially. A fan that produces stronger pressure due to the set of blades positioned in a central shaft. It is also known as a centrifugal fan.

S

Shaft
An underground vertical or inclined passageway.

Sheave
A wheel (or a roller) that has a groove along its edge intended for holding a belt/rope/cable. When it is hung between two supports and equipped with a belt/rope/cable, one or more sheaves make up a pulley. The words sheave and pulley are sometimes used interchangeably.

Silencer
A device attached to an exhaust system to reduce the level of noise.

Site Supervision
A service with the objective of assisting the installation of a product, or the commissioning of new and / or reconditioned fans.

T

Thermal:
Heat in the air produced by the Earth’s temperature.

Tunnel Ventilation
A ventilation system designed specifically so that air may enter at one end, and then be exhausted by ventilation fans on the other side.

V

Ventilation
When air is intentionally moved from the outside of a building to the inside.

Ventilation Shaft
Vertical passages used in mines and tunnels to move fresh air underground, and to remove stale air.

Vibration Analysis
A service done to check how smoothly a fan can operate. There is a range and limit that the performance of the fan must meet before it is pronounced to be of standard quality.

W

Welded
A form of ducting where the edges are merged together. This is done for ducts that are too thin to be locked and pressed together.
